Greetings all!

Postby Andz » Sat Dec 19, 2009 5:52 pm

Hi every one, I'm new on the board, but only after I registered that I noticed the last post is from 2007

I hope this is still alive.

Any ways, my reason for being here is that I'm a game developer... almost 20 years involved in computer graphics in general but the last 4 years exclusively in the games field. Modeling, animating, texture painting, art directions, etc... even programming.

So I heard that Finland is THE place for games. But I'm currently far away in Brazil right now.

It has come that time in life where my wife is starting to talk about having kids, and all... So, we started to look around for safer and better places to rise kids and have a calm way of living.

I've been getting in touch with some Finnish companies, sending my cv and portfolio, etc. I've made some good contacts, but way fewer than I'd like. I guess that because a lot of the companies are small.

I'm not really looking for employment exactly, but that would also be welcomed, what I was looking for is maybe some type of partnership or else. As I'm currently happy working where I am right now, maybe not in the best place on earth to live a calm life but is still a great place, and I get payed to do what i love! :D

Resuming this huge post  , I thank you guys for the attention, and I'd really appreciate any insight on ideas, people, places I could try a direct contact on these matters.

Cheers,
Andz

Hello there!

Yeah this is very much still alive, there's just nothing very "visible" happening in Draconus right now but don't worry... lots of things happening ;)

Anyway, about your own topic. Let me be honest with you; I have no idea where you might have figured out Finland to be "the place" for game development, we don't have even two-digit amount of game development houses which would have been around for more than 1 random titles. Sorry :S Finland in addition is a ridiculously expensive place (highest VAT tax in whole Europe etc) and we have a long history of socialist/leftist politics which is one of the reason our corporate taxing is shit as well and for some reason the whole concept of business/commercialization simply doesn't fit the average Finn's national identity.

Anyway ;) Here is a quick list I can come up in the middle of the night:
Bug Bear, Remedy, Frozen Byte, Housemarque, Recoil, Digital Chocolate. I think those are the largest around but I might be forgetting something obvious. Like Red Lynx :)

Are you sure you think coming to Finland is a good idea? It's -20 centigrades cold our there right now and it's not even the coldest season, Brazil sounds quite a good place for me right now B) Well to be honest it's one of the safest country though I think, so if you can cope with the weather then welcome!

Tell you what. Why not work from the freelancer perspective? We're interested in especially graphical talent right now and at least our organization doesn't require relocation of any kind. If you're interested, find out the business email from the main pages and we'll talk more.

Take care!

Hi Dragst thanks for the response and sorry for the delay... you know how it is this times of the year.

I have to admit that doesn't matter how much I read or talk to others about Finland, I'll only know how it really is once I'm there. The good thing is that I've lived about half my life moving around world so I know the harsh parts of living in a different culture and I thank your honesty about how you see it. I've found out that it is better to ask a question like "What do you hate about this or that?". This way I can decide if I can cope with the flaws or not... every thing else, the good parts, comes in as a bonus. I just hope my wife will be as adaptive since she lived in one place her whole life.

What I meant about Finland being "THE" place :-) Well, I never expected it to be the Hollywood of Games :-) And neither I wanted it to be in a place like that. Is just that I hear a lot about it on game dev. magazines and forums. I have probably contacted all those companies you mentioned. Some of them, like BugBear only accept people fluent in suomen kieli while others definitely wanted to meet me in person once I'm there.

I'd definitely be interested in start out as a freelancer, it's good for both parties to get to know each other, and I have also demonstrated that intention while contacting companies abroad. I'll get in touch with you guys by email, and I'll send some samples of more recent arts I've done for games.

Cheers, and thank you again!

P.S.: Talking again about weather... we had +38C yesterday, have you ever imagined a summer Christmas ? :onfire:
